South Congress begins at the Colorado River and runs due south. Since its humble beginnings in the 1850s, South Congress Avenue has been transformed from a rural country road to the capital city gateway and, finally, to the vibrant shopping district that it is today. Many Austinites attribute its enduring popularity to the magnificent and unobstructed view of the Texas State Capitol.
South Congress isn't just an iconic Austin street, it's a Texas landmark.
Couture food trailers, funky shops, and a spirited atmosphere typify this trendy neighborhood dedicated to keeping Austin weird. Directly across the lake from Downtown, SoCo (how the hip kids say South Congress these days) brims with things to see, places to shop, and bars and restaurants to drink and dine.
